With a high demand for gold farming, many RuneScape players out of Venezuela believe aspects of RuneScape are governed by it. RuneScape's market is exactly like any other market -- it is heavily influenced by the economics of scarcity, and the growing amount of people farming gold and items in RuneScape is affecting prices for a variety of unique items. The extent of the impact became evident once the catastrophe in Venezuela escalated to a new degree early last year.

In March 2019, the power network of Venezuela collapsed along with the nation was struck by a succession of blackouts, leaving millions without electricity or water. Hospitals were some of the worst areas. "A hell of a good deal of people died due to the power cuts," Martinez explains. The issues are still affecting people today, and some think they will continue long into the future, before the situation with the government is solved.

"[People] can not get treatment like dialysis and the hospitals' conditions are bad to the point that it's a hazard problem," Martinez adds. The power cuts have become a major problem for RuneScape players who rely on RuneScape as their chief source of revenue. For Martinez, the power cuts were why he moved away from conventional gold farming approaches to train accounts for U.S. dollars, because of sudden disconnection during battle could result in the death of his character and the loss of earnings. "When the first wave of blackouts began me and the guys that worked with me lost nearly all of our enterprise," Martinez says.

"Disconnections are routine but not as long as it was when they first began," he continues. They can still affect you for several days depending on that part of Venezuela you reside in." Perez has been severely affected by the power cuts. He regularly gets disconnected from our online chats. "All of us know the power system and the rest of the nation controlled systems are a wreck," Perez continues. "An example of lack of care is the nation owned ISP. We've been chatting for a few minutes and also my internet has stopped working three occasions now. Hydro/water system then you don't have water if you do not have water pumps. I could go on and on, honestly."
