Winning group status in Qatar, France will now face Poland in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup...

France are the defending champions at the 2022 World Cup and manager Didier Deschamps will be hoping his squad can become the third country to win in a row after Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962).

The 2022 edition will be their 16th appearance at the World Cup, a competition they have won twice (1998, 2018).

He still has a lot of options in the middle, but losing two key players who led them to win in Russia is a big blow.

Real Madrid duo Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni could start together in a double pivot, although Deschamps could have opted for a more experienced player instead of Camavinga in his starting XI.

FRANCE STAR PLAYER

France was lined up as one of the toughest squads at the World Cup and almost had one world-class player in every line.

Varane, Upamecano and Konate are in contention for the two central defender positions and all three are quality starters.

Aurelian Tchouameni is like a tank in midfield who is able to damage opponent's attacks while sending passes to all sides of the field.

Up front, Mbappe leads the top scorer race, aka the Golden Boot with three goals and is France's brightest star, while Griezmann, in a deeper position, has become a first-class playmaker in Qatar.

Giroud has also scored a brace against Australia to match Thierry Henry's record as France's all-time top scorer.

Lloris again became the first choice under the crossbar.

Deschamps decided at the last moment to return to a back four. Varane and Upamecano also became starters tasked with spaying Robert Lewandowski, while Pavard and Theo Hernandez filled the full-back positions.

Up front, Mbappe and Dembele have lethal pace down the flanks, while Griezmann has sprung up behind target man Giroud.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante picked up a hamstring injury in the draw against Tottenham and will only be able to watch Les Bleus from afar after undergoing surgery.

Meanwhile Juventus frontman Paul Pogba has suffered another injury just days after returning to training.
