Posted December 29, 2021 01:44 PM

It may have taken some time, but Jujutsu Kaisen is back and bigger than ever. The anime is revisiting fans at last courtesy of its first movie, and of course, all eyes are on Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The movie has brought a new crew of sorcerers to the screen, giving fans an idea of what the franchise was up to before Yuji and Sakuna entered the fray. And as it turns out, the box office is thriving overseas thanks to the Jujutsu Kaisen premiere.

The whole update comes from Japan following the box office's last weekend. December 24th marked the premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 overseas, and fans were quick to check out the film. And according to the latest reports, the ambitious movie grossed nearly $23 million USD in its first three days.

If you want to break things down even more so, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 welcomed nearly two million admissions in its opening weekend. The turnout in Japan for this film was wild, and despite the pandemic, fans found ways to gather for this film from all over. With 1.9 million tickets sold, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has the second-highest opening of any movie in Japan now. This new record sent Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to third place, and first place still belongs to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train. The latter film broke box office records in Japan by droves last year, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba now has the highest-grossing anime film globally to date.

Now, fans are eager to see when Jujutsu Kaisen 0 makes its way stateside. There is no confirmed release date for the film's stateside debut, but netizens are hoping Yuta comes around by mid-2022. You can always read Jujutsu Kaisen 0 if you cannot wait for its premiere as Viz Media publishes the prequel. You can find the one-shot's official synopsis below:
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Set For Big Opening In Japan

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the first movie in the supernatural Shonen series that has taken the world by storm thanks to the sorcerers of Jujutsu Tech, and with the prequel film now playing in theaters in Japan, the movie is set to have a big opening. While this movie set in the universe created by Gege Akutami might not come within striking distance of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, the current biggest anime film in history, the prequel is certainly set to make a splash all the same.

Toho, the distributors of the film, have announced that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has sold over one million tickets, which is the equivalent of around $87 million USD for its opening. While the film might not come within striking distance of the current number one anime film in the world, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, these opening number certainly go to show how popular the franchise has become since first hitting the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump.

With fans in the West waiting to hear when they can expect the movie to arrive in North America, fans are also waiting for news with regards to a second season from Studio MAPPA, which has yet to be announced even with the recent panel at this year's Jump Festa.

The Official Description of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel film that shows us the world created by Gege Akutami before Yuji Itadori became its protagonist, reads as such:

"Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won't leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?"

Surprisingly enough, this prequel story was the first story released for Jujutsu Kaisen in its manga, but bore a decidedly different name, releasing under the title of "Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School" which is certainly a mouthful.

Do you think Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will come within striking distance of the Mugen Train when its theatrical run comes to a close? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Jujutsu Tech.

Hajime No Ippo Creator Shares Thoughts On Berserk's Finale

In 2021, the anime world lost a titan as the creator of Berserk, Kentaro Miura, passed away before bringing his dark franchise to a close, and following the last chapter by the prolific mangaka, the creator of Hajime No Ippo, Jyoji Morikawa, has shared his thoughts on what might be the final chapter of the Band of the Hawk. Currently, the future of Berserk is up in the air as the publishers at Young Animal have yet to reveal if the series will continue without Miura at the helm and if his assistants will bring the series to an end.

Morikawa and Miura's franchises could not be more different with Hajime No Ippo following the story of a young boxer attempting to climb his way to the top of the boxing world. While Guts of Berserk fame certainly had trials and tribulations in front of him, they were far more brutal and dark than those that would face Ippo on a daily basis. Both Kentaro and Morikawa shared a friendship with one another, and following the news of Miura's passing, Morikawa hasn't been shy about paying tribute to his departed friend and touting his work as some of the best ever seen in the medium of manga.

Jyoji Morikawa took to his official Twitter account, sharing his love for his deceased friend while stating how amazing the artist was following reading what might very well be the last chapter of Berserk's manga, that saw Guts and Casca somewhat confronting Griffith in a way that many didn't see coming:

Much like Berserk, Hajime No Ippo first began in the 1980s and is continuing to tell the story of Ippo throughout the decades. Receiving a number of anime adaptations similar to Berserk, Hajime No Ippo has yet to say if it will be returning to the small screen, though there is plenty of material that has yet to be translated to a potential anime. The world lost a true talent in Kentaro Miura and it's clear that the mangaka not only had an impact on anime fans, but fellow anime creators throughout the years.

What did you think of the final chapter of Berserk from Kentaro Miura? Do you want the series to continue under Miura's assistants? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the worlds of Kentaro Miura and Jyoji Morikawa.
